When I returned to Lacoste in the spring of 1996, I worked on these assemblages of mixed materials. Some were started in the early 1990’s, but in 1996 the effort was more consistent. I continued working on them through 1997, and again some after they arrived in New York in 2000 or 2001.

It was in 1997 that I looked at them and thought about what themes had been explored. Oddly enough it occurred to me that even though the boxes did not (were not intended to) draw upon the content of Neitsche’s books, the titles of some of his books could be aptly enough appropriated for titles of the boxes. Voila, my reflections on the stuff and situations of life humbly found a kind of parallel with Neitsche.
