This was a commissioned piece – a mermaid to sit under a glass top of a desk-table. The idea was for the mermaid to appear to be holding up the glass, but I did not want her to appear to be in an aquarium. I imagined her at her ease, not actively engaged with either the glass or the viewer but not somnolent, rather, the beginning of a smile on regal features, powerful in her element.
