My trip to China and Chinese art did not have a direct inspiration on my stone sculpture. It was the “machines”-assemblages ideas that were influenced: to make things in different materials, and to work with different methods of modeling and assembling and incorporating color.
The Valise is about setting out on a journey, and the impossibility of packing for it because you never know where it will take you – creatively, imaginatively, and intellectually. Made with the frame of a small rattan valise that lets the winds through, its unlabeled arms point to one or every direction, depending where you turn the spigot at the top inside the bird cage. Old stone symbol at the bottom represents the baggage best left behind, or at least forgotten for the duration.
