The Bait Detail

When I visited China, it was still primarily an agricultural country that had tried to enter the contemporary world through the promises of communism. Like the lure of the golden fleece from ancient Greek stories, the promise of technology and food for all had fed the fervor of collective factory work and farming. During the cultural revolution these goals caused the destruction of much ancient culture as well as humanity – families were uprooted and countless lives lost. The forms of the vines I used for this piece reminded me of that sea of torsos, of bodies sacrificed for catastrophic results. The red piece of vine represents the promise that caused the bleeding. The gold threads dangle the bait, the nails represent technology, and the grains of rice represent the food for all, little of which materialized.
