The last time I visited chez Farelle was November 2001. Pierre had passed away about one year before. I hadn’t seen Liliane since perhaps 1996 or earlier. She had not changed, and she showed me more of her paintings. We walked out to look at my sculptures, which were in afternoon shadow so these photos are dark, but the piece is still forceful. The Three Graces had taken on a lovely, even patina. Liliane liked the patina, which, if anything, helped the sculpture, drawing the lines more dramatically, and curiously reinforcing the volumes. There was something almost weak to the volumes when they were bright white –perhaps not unlike the white egg –the whiteness reminding you of the fragility of the shell.. I did not get this impression from all my pieces when they were white. But many did mature well with patina.
