Bac A Fleurs A Gargas

Steady commission work forPierrot started with “les bacs-a-fleurs” (flower containers). Intended to be decorative pieces for public spaces, he wanted carving on them that looked ancient, liketombeaux (tombs). I took arches from Romanesque tombs and reliquaries, patterns from Romans and Celts, etc.

I actually enjoyed this work, which gave free rein to a certain fascination I had with pattern. Pattern usually seems to be a closed set of forms but can be secretly open, repetition can hide and carry events and narrative.

I worked on these in 1981 and 1982 for sure, maybe continued until 1983 when they were photographed after installed in front of the town hall of Gargas.
