The Autobiography triptych was an idea that began slowly in my head, and I started the middle panel chez Ravoire in the spring. The canvases were large enough to get in many elements and references, from looking at sculpture in the museums and in the books over the previous four years, and trying to use the history of art as another mirror of what I wanted to do as a sculptor.

The thirdpanel, and the total, were not completed until 1988. I had decided that all those references were to be trusted, and my study and understanding of them to be trusted, yetthey should be forgotten as dictators, let go of – levitation and humor are then possible.

Sculpture, ongoing in 1981:
In the summer 1981 I worked on Icarus.
In the fall 1981 I worked on Icarus and also small pieces in the village studios and/or at L’Ubac.
