I worked on a few new projects also in the summer of 1977. We were making sculptural maquettes with the wonderful red clay from the roof tile factories in Apt and I used it for a portrait of Bob Lebs. Due to his distinctive hair and mustache, it was easy to get a likeness, but it was the eyes, cheekbones, and chin that secured it. Somehow the act of working figuratively in the clay in the environment of stone gave me some confidence to start to approach stone carving figuratively also.
