The sculptor YasuoMizui was in residence in 1974 making his “Yin et Yang” piece during a short period of time in the school quarry. The “Oscillo Tour” from 1972 was already in the quarry, and in 1975 he made “Zig et Zag”.
My “Autoportrait – Two Dancers” piece shows Mizui’sinfluence, obviously I had been looking a lot at his “Oscillo Tour”. In a different vein, my intention was to depict a couple – still using, however, non-objective abstract forms to represent or symbolize the figures. However much I wanted to find my own shapes to represent the two dancers where they move as one, I fully acknowledge it is derived from one side of Mizui’s “Oscillo Tour”. I had a good friendship with Mizui and his wife over the years and I’m very grateful.
The stone eventually took on a deep grey patina, which seems to give it a better sense of humor. It also tightens it up, making it less bottom-heavy, less weighed down. It seems to be moving better and enjoying itself more.
